For the first time since ancient times philosophy has a practice – and that practice is Focusing!
Does that make sense to you?
Does that seem important to you?
If so, you'll want to join us!
If not, maybe you need to join us, for this year's weeklong of Focusing and philosophy on the beautiful Scottish Isle of Cumbrae. Last year was wonderful, exciting and very moving. We can't wait to dig down together into Gendlin's fabulous book, EXPERIENCING AND THE CREATION OF MEANING (ECM). The whole of our movement started here! The book really IS fabulous. ECM may be terribly dry on the surface, but (you know) the desert blooms like nowhere else when it rains.
Gene is confident:
"Philosophy has come a long way towards me since this book was first written, almost to the edge where this philosophy begins."
Actually, Gene has come a long way towards himself since the book was written, because if you turn to the index, you'll find the body isn't even mentioned!!!
The fact that Focusing is possible shows that we are created more by our future than by our past. (That must include Gene Gendlin and ECM!). There is a life forward direction. We are always forming towards something, sensing into this situation to see how it is carried forward.
What is this "forming towards"? In the past two minutes (or the last 40 years), what is happening in Focusing? in listening? in therapy? in philosophy? in creativity? We shall enter into all of this in a deep and lively way.
Gene is confident here too: "The reader can be ready to improve on what is done here."
Shall we justify this confidence?
Since you really care about Focusing, you want to think about what it is:
What kind of thinking lies behind our practice?
How is our Focusing carried forward, once we understand that thinking?
What did Gene bring that was new, and what did he import from a tradition?
"We can think everything more truly if we think philosophically, that is with attention to how we think it… Our more intricate experiencing… is always there again, and open to being carried forward in new ways, never arbitrarily, but always in quite special and precise ways."
This will be the first time a group of Focusers has sat down together to inhabit the work that gave birth to Focusing!
We hope you'll come to Scotland this September, for a life-changing week that will bring heart and mind together.
And the body too…!
